Marilyn Elizabeth (Humphrey) Quarles, age 89, of Springville, AL passed away February 6, 2018, at UAB Hospital from complications of a stroke.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Virginia C. Brothers and Arnold Frank Humphrey of Attalla AL; brother, Arnold F. Humphrey, of Miami FL; and husband, L.D, Quarles of Springville, AL. [September 30,1924-May 10, 1982].

Mrs. Quarles is survived by sisters Norma Smith, and Ernestine Hodges Owen; son Leigh Darryl Quarles, M.D. and wife Anne; three great grandchildren, Jamison Hall Quarles, Emma Leigh Quarles, and August Eric Farmer.

Marilyn was born on December 31, 1928, in Etowah County, AL. She graduated from Etowah High School in the class of 1946 and enrolled in Montevallo College. She married L.D Quarles in September of 1946, and they started a successful business, the Spring Theatre, and legendary Dairy Dip restaurant. Marilyn returned to college in the early 1960's, attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Masters in Education. She taught in the Saint Clair County School system for 30 years, including at Margaret, Steel, Odenville, and Springville. She was the fifth woman elected to the Alabama State Legislature in 1974.

She married Chalres L. Bromberg, IV in 1986, but later divorced. She owned and operated the Twin Cinema in pell City for many years. Marilyn lived in Springville for over 70 years and most recently at Saint Martin's in the Pines in Birmingham. She was an independent spirit to the end.

After a private burial in the Springville Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at 2 PM on February 24th in Cemetery Chapel located at 875 Robison St., Springville, AL.
