Rufus Simuel Nix, Jr. MORGANTON, GA - Mr. Rufus Simuel Nix, Jr., age 95, passed away Monday, February 25, 2019.
He was born in Homewood, AL, March 31, 1923. Rufus grew up on his family's farm. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Radarman, Second Class during World War II in the Pacific aboard a sub chaser in two full campaigns. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he married Joyce Gann of Ensley, AL in 1949.
Rufus graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology in 1950, where he also taught Criminal Justice. He began his career as a State Correctional Officer, and eventually spent over 40 years as a State and Federal Probation Officer. Rufus retired at the age of 71 and has spent his retirement enjoying time with his family and cheering on Alabama Roll Tide on Saturdays in the fall.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Nix of Morganton, GA; sister, Emma Jane Compton of Jasper, AL; son, David Nix of Morganton, GA, and his wife, Connie; granddaughter, Leah Lang of Marietta, GA, and her husband, Steven; grandsons, Geoff Cannon of Brunswick, GA, and his wife, Jessica; Matthew Nix of St. Petersburg, FL and Michael Nix of Morganton, GA; and six great-grandchildren.
Rufus lived a full and rich life and served his country with honor.
A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, AL on Thursday, February 28 at 1 p.m.
